MIAMI – The mother of a newborn in South Florida is praising doctors for her son’s survival. Her son was born with an extremely rare deformation. Little Jordan Smith was born with what doctors determined to be an undeveloped twin protruding from his mouth.

Just nine days after his birth, the massive growth was completely removed by doctors at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Doctors say this case is very rare, occurring in only one in every 100,000 births. According to Dr. Ramzi Younis of the University of Miami, there have been only 70 cases since 1945 reported, and the majority do not survive. However, the improvements in prenatal care have really helped in the treatment of these rare cases.

Jordan is now two months old and according to his doctor, he should be able to maintain a normal life.
