CHICAGO (AP) — Authorities say a Chicago man who barricaded himself in a hospital for hours has been charged in the shooting deaths of his parents.

Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Robert Perez says 53-year-old Kermit Washington is charged with first-degree murder. The bodies of 77-year-old Johnnie Washington and 79-year-old Joe Washington were found in the home they shared with their son.

Police say the Washingtons were killed Tuesday night. Authorities say Kermit Washington walked into the lobby of the Jesse Brown Veterans Administration Medical Center early Wednesday and fired a shot. Nobody was hurt. Washington then holed up in an ER exam room before surrendering peacefully after seven hours of negotiations with police.

Police say Washington also is charged with aggravated assault.

It was not immediately known if he had an attorney. He was due in bond court on Thursday.
