For more than 20 years Phoenix, Arizona police detectives had few clues in the murder of 78-year-old Marlon Darton.

That changed Tuesday when 52-year-old Kenneth Jackson, a former neighbor of Darton, walked into a Phoenix police station and confessed to the crime.

Jackson told police he’d beaten Darton to death during a robbery. He then used the money to score drugs.

After the murder Jackson moved to California, where he eventually kicked drugs and found religion. He told investigators that he could never escape the guilty feelings over what he’d done.

Finally, he drove to Georgia to talk to his sister about the crime, then got in his car and drove straight to Phoenix to confess.

Jackson has been booked on suspicion of first degree murder and robbery. He’s currently being held on a $250,000 bond.
