CNBC’s Shartia Brantley reports that earnings season officially kicks off this week as Alcoa, a Dow Chemical component, reports fourth quarter earnings. Key reports on the economy due this week include the Fed’s Beige Book (due Wednesday), which provides information on credit, consumer spending and manufacturing from the Fed’s twelve districts, including Atlanta, Cleveland and San Francisco.

The December industrial production report and retail sales report are also due this week. The November industrial production report showed a 0.8 percent improvement, with manufacturing and mining contributing to the gain. The November retail sales report showed a 1.3 percent jump in sales, which was higher than expected.

The January report on Consumer Price Index is due Friday. The December CPI report showed a slight increase in consumer prices overall due to rising gas, oil and used car prices.
