The NAACP is calling for an independent investigation into the police shooting of a 2-year-old and his mother during a carjacking in Jacksonville, Florida.

The mother, Joanne Cooper, was inside the car along with her two children when she was carjacked at a Wendy’s last Friday.

NAACP chapter president Isaiah Rumlin says this case needs an outsider’s perspective.

The carjacking suspects never fired their weapons. Sheriff John Rutherford has not answered questions about why his officers fired over 40 shots.

The 2-year old remains in critical condition.
