Progress in the Recession is an event coordinated by New York barber Denny Moe where men and women come out to perform spoken word about life experiences. It leads up to Cutting for a Cure, a 48-hour hair-cutting marathon each June that raises awareness for cancer and other life-altering illnesses within the urban community.

The Cutting for a Cure mission is to raise awareness through education and early detection, and in a partnership with St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital, to provide free health screenings for breast cancer, colon and prostate cancer. Volunteers at the event will be administering exams for diabetes high blood pressure and cholesterol free of charge. There are health workshops and medical personnel available for consultation for all who attend.

The ultimate goal of Cutting for a Cure is to have barbers through out the United States cut hair for 48 hours simultaneously in that same effort to raise awareness.
