Ted Danson dressed in blackface during a Friar’s Club roast in Whoopi’s honor. When critics attacked the former Cheers star, Goldberg jumped to his defense by claiming “they should have expected tasteless, vulgar humor.”
Roman Polanski and ‘rape-rape’
While the ladies of The View discussed the rape charges filed against director Roman Polanski, Goldberg mitigated the offense by saying it wasn’t ‘rape-rape’.
“Mel Gibson is no racist”
Goldberg has defended what many believe to be Mel Gibson’s racist rants in a tape recorded conversation with his girlfriend. It will be all your fault if “you get raped by a pack of ni**ers”, a Gibson-sounding man screamed. Goldberg stood up for the actor by calling him a ‘bonehead’, but ‘not a racist’.
Just ‘not funny’
After former White House correspondent Helen Thomas announced that Jews should go back to ‘Germany and Poland’, Bill O’Reilly called her the “wicked witch of the east.” Goldberg appeared on his show and told him ‘if you’re gonna do humor, learn how to do it!’
Dropped by Slim Fast
At a fundraiser for John Kerry, Goldberg made a vulgar joke about President Bush by waving a bottle of wine, pointing toward her own genitalia and saying, “We should keep Bush where he belongs, and not in the White House.” Slim Fast promptly dropped her from their endorsement deal.
Leopard print Oscar gown
The fashion police was all over the comedienne for donning this leopard print Dior dress at the 2009 Oscars. Goldberg addressed the critics on the View by proudly announcing that the dress gave her “comfort and flow” and allowed her to wear “regular underwear.” TMI?
Dog-fighting is part of his ‘upbringing’
During one of their usual heated debates, the ladies of The View bumped heads regarding the Michael Vick dog-fighting scandal. Whoopi seemed to take the NFL quarterback’s side by claiming that dog-fighting is ‘not all that unusual’ where he comes from.
Got leakage?
Controversial or amusing? We’re not quite sure with this one where Whoopi dresses as a variety of famous female icons throughout history for a Poise commercial. In this photo, she dons a blonde wig as Lady Godiva and complains about her bladder leakage. Lovely.
The Whoopi Show
The short-lived NBC series managed to offend Middle Eastern viewers by poking fun at their accent and way of life. “People may not like it, but they will talk about it, kind of like ‘Archie Bunker of 2003’”, Goldberg said.
Snubbed by Oscar
While discussing a recent Academy Awards telecast, The View moderator got all choked up when the topic turned to a montage that the Academy presented for all of their previous hosts. Goldberg, who hosted the show in 2002 was suspiciously left out of the tribute.
Whoopi Goldberg, Oscar-winning actress and co-host of The View, has been making headlines this week for defending what many believe to be Mel Gibson’s racist rants.
“I don’t like what he did here but I know Mel, and I know that he’s not a racist,” Goldberg said on The View Monday.
It’s a bold claim considering a voice that sounds very much like Gibson’s can be heard screaming racial epithets and virtually every sexist remark imaginable on tape.
But this is not the first time Goldberg has stirred the pot of controversy. Remember when she claimed Roman Polanski didn’t commit “rape-rape”?
Take a look at this slideshow to be reminded of a few other times the actress found herself in hot water.
