HBO announced today that Tracy Morgan will tape a one-hour stand-up special, ‘Tracy Morgan: Black and Blue,’ at the Apollo Theatre in New York City on September 24 and 25. After more than 20 years in stand-up, this will be his first HBO hour. His previous specials were for Comedy Central (‘One Mic’) or straight to video (‘Life, Love & Lust’).

These days, people recognize Morgan as Tracy Jordan of ‘30 Rock,’ a role that earned him a 2009 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy series. He’s been in mainstream movies like ‘Death at a Funeral’ and ‘Cop Out,’ and is one of the most spontaneous, sought-after guests on the talk show circuit (see video below). People might also remember him as a longtime cast member of ‘Saturday Night Live’ from 1996 to 2003.

But do people really know Morgan, the stand-up comedian? He has never really stopped doing it, touring by himself or with shows like Opie and Anthony’s Traveling Virus. And while Tina Fey has created a character for Morgan that really matches his off-the-wall sensibility, and he gets away with a lot on talk shows, Morgan the stand-up comedian is much more raw, much less ready for prime time, and an HBO special would be the perfect place to showcase that.
