Luther Vandross was outed as gay after his death.

Ethel Jones was sleeping in early Monday morning when she heard a commotion at the back of her Decatur, Alabama home. When she went to check it out she was confronted by a man in her hallway holding a small flashlight.

Jones, meanwhile, was holding the revolver that she keeps under her pillow. She fired three shots at the man, who then ran screaming from the residence. Jones said she never thought she would ever need her pistol, but after a scary situation, she’s glad she had it.

“I figured if I needed it, it would have to be where I can get to it,” said Jones. At least one of her bullets found its target.Authorities say 18-year-old Michael Oneal Bynum was hit once in the abdomen.

After fleeing he returned to his home, located less than two hundred yards from Jones’ house.Bynum was taken by private vehicle to Decatur General Hospital and was then transferred to Huntsville Hospital where he remains in stable condition.

Authorities obtained an arrest warrant for Bynum on charges of 2nd degree burglary, and his bond was set at $10,000, but when it was quickly learned that he was on probation for a prior burglary conviction. His probation was then revoked, and Bynum will be held without bond upon his release from the hospital.

Still shaken up over the incident, Ethel said, “I hate it happened, but it’s just something that couldn’t be helped, he should have known better.”
