There has not been a black Republican in Congress since 2003, but this year conservative African-American candidates could make a comeback. As of today, fourteen African-American candidates are on the ballot for the GOP in the November midterm election.

“I think we just haven’t seen enough minority Republicans who have had the desire and the will to run for Congress. And I think that’s why we’re seeing numbers the likes of which we haven’t seen in a generation or more,” says Congressional candidate, Ryan Frazier from Colorado, on the lack African-American GOP members in Congress.

Frazier is often mentioned alongside Allen West from Florida and Tim Scott of South Carolina, because they are all seen as African-American Republicans likely to win Congressional seats.

According to Frazier, what will really turn the tide in this election cycle, is the fact that “people are really fundamentally concerned about the direction of the country, the economy is a big issue, and job creation is what people want.” The candidate alludes to the fact that the GOP is genuinely attuned to the voters needs, and perhaps that they have the keys to fixing the country’s problems.

“That’s why I think you have so many new people who are running for Congress this year, to represent the people and hopefully shape a better America, not just for ourselves, but for future generations.”
