It seems like whoever is writing the headlines, and writing the leads is just missing the point. A headline in politico today, read “Obama’s white working class problem,” in The New York Times the headline was, “Democrats’ Grip On The South Continues To Slip.” The article says that the Democratic party is, “facing a situation where its only safe presence in the South is in urban and predominantly black districts.” Apparently white people just aren’t voting for democrats like they used to.

The flip side about Democrats losing the white vote is that Republicans are locking up the white vote this year. The Republican party is securing, in particular, that white working class vote. Apparently it makes sense to offend minorities and turn the minority vote against you because although the you may lose the small number of minority votes, you may also lock up solidly a larger number of white voters.

So then there are candidates who send around really, really, really racist jokes and videos, or candidates who run virulently anti-Latino ads and comment about Latinos looking Asian.
