Bishop Arthur M. Brazier, the civil rights crusader, community activist and revered retired pastor of Chicago’s Apostolic Church of God, has died.

Brazier, 89, led the Pentecostal congregation for 48 years, building up the South Side church, driving out gang violence, fighting for affordable housing and revitalizing the surrounding community. He also marched alongside Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. to protest segregation.

“Bishop’s passing represents a great loss to my family, our church, and our community,” the Rev. Byron Brazier said in a letter to the congregation. “We will indeed miss him. Yet, we will mourn his passing and celebrate his life with the dignity and grace for which he was known.”
