President George W. Bush’s exclusive interview with Matt Lauer will air nationally at 8pm EST on NBC. It is Bush’s first televised sit-down interview since leaving office in 2009.

When Lauer asks the former president about Kanye West’s infamous comment about him “not caring about black people” during the Hurricane Katrina telethon Bush replied saying he didn’t watch the comment live but when he heard he didn’t appreciate it. He said he found Kanye’s comments “disgusting” and felt they marked the lowest point of his presidential career.

Kanye West empathizes with President Bush who says West’s criticism of his handling of Hurricane Katrina was the same as branding him a “racist.” West told Houston hip-hop station 97.9 The Box that he can “understand the way he feels to be accused of being a racist” because the same thing happened to him when he interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the VMAs on MTV. He says both cases showed “a lack of compassion.”
