CHICAGO (AP) — Carol Moseley Braun was the first black woman in history to win a seat in the U.S. Senate, and quickly won notice by standing up to a powerful senator in a fight over the Confederate flag.
But when she launches a campaign Saturday for Chicago mayor, she’ll have to reintroduce herself to many voters, some who weren’t even born the last time she won an election.
The 63-year-old Braun may try to recapture the breath-of-fresh-air enthusiasm that carried her to the Senate in 1992. She says her experience in all levels of politics make her uniquely qualified.
But if she hopes to succeed longtime Mayor Richard M. Daley, she’ll have to explain the miscues that limited her to a single Senate term, including a visit with a brutal Nigerian dictator.
