Last weekend, a black New York cab driver was shot and seriously injured by a gunman who was reported to be Hispanic.

Soon after, Fernando Mateo, the president of the New York Taxi Driver’s Federation announced that it was acceptable for drivers to racial profile prospective passengers in order to prevent violence.

What should cab drivers do to protect themselves?

What if the taxi drivers themselves are black and Hispanic? Is it racist to if you are profiling your own race?
