DETROIT (AP) — A Nigerian man charged with trying to blow up an airliner as it approached Detroit last Christmas Day is returning to court to hear new charges.

Federal prosecutors in Detroit added two charges Wednesday, including conspiracy to commit terrorism. The government believes Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab (OO’-mahr fah-ROOK’ ahb-DOOL’-moo-TAH’-lahb) had help in Yemen in the months leading to the failed attack.

The 24-year-old man is accused of trying to blow up a Northwest Airlines flight from Amsterdam by igniting an explosive in his underwear. Passengers saw flames and subdued Abdulmutallab.

He’s due to be arraigned Thursday in federal court in Detroit. Abdulmutallab, who is serving as his own lawyer, is being held at a prison in Milan, Mich., while he awaits trial.
