It’s a miracle that the 7-year-old is alive today. She’s already survived more in her young life than most and she’s done it literally with only half a heart.

In 2004, nine-month-old Winderland was brought to a clinic by her mother and she was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect.

“Winderland was born with a hole in the wall between the lower chambers of her heart, Doctor John Carol said. It was very easy to tell she needed cardiac surgery.”

Doctor Carol and his wife Maria then went on a nation wide search for a hospital that would accept Winderland in the United States. After they got word that Sutter Chimpbldren’s Center in California would accept the little girl in the end of 2009, the powerful earthquake that caused much destruction in Haiti erupted and Winderland was lost amidst the chaos.

Time passed and the Carols never lost hope that they would find little Winderland, and finally they did.

Through their Illinois based organization Haitian Hearts, they found the child, got her a Visa, and flew her to Sacramento for her heart surgery.

The surgery was successful.
