Parents of fourth-graders at Greeley School, located in a northern suburb of Chicago, are up in arms after students were shown Middle Passage, a movie that graphically depicts the voyage of Africans who were brought to the Americas as slaves.

Many of the parents argue the although it is important for their children to learn about the slave trade, the imagery in the movie is too disturbing for the young students. The film, which tackles issues such as suicide, rape, and a host of other atrocities faced on the slave ships has no rating, but its cover states the movie has “adult content, nudity, and violence.”

NBC’s Chicago spoke to Patrick Livney, whose 9 year-old daughter was in the class that saw the video.
