MEMPHIS – Toney Armstrong has been unanimously approved by the Memphis City Council to be the new police director.
Armstrong told a council committee on Tuesday that he believes he has what it takes to head one of the largest departments in the South.

“I’ve worked in uniformed patrol. I’ve worked in investigations and organized crime. I’ve even worked undercover,” he said.
Armstrong also shed light on his plans for the department.
“Obviously there will be some units that I will have to reevaluate. I won’t sit here today and say there will be absolutely no changes, but I also won’t sit here and say there won’t be sweeping changes,” he said.
The new director stated that he wants everything to be upfront and transparent.
