NORWALK, Conn. (AP) — A homeless single mother accused of stealing nearly $16,000 in education for her son is asking prosecutors to drop the charges so the school district can handle the case administratively.

Tanya McDowell’s attorney says that would put her on equal footing with 26 other families who also purposely enrolled their children in Norwalk schools under wrong addresses. McDowell was the only one arrested.

She is charged with felony larceny for allegedly using her baby sitter’s address to enroll her 5-year-old in Norwalk. Prosecutors say she later said she lived in Bridgeport and never indicated she was homeless.

A Connecticut parents’ advocacy group submitted a petition Wednesday with about 15,700 signatures collected online asking prosecutors to drop charges.

McDowell’s son now lives in Bridgeport with relatives and attends school there.
