From NBC New York

Police in the Bronx are investigating the shooting death of a 29-year-old woman who was walking home with her young son when she was shot in the head.

According to police, Claudia Millan was returning home from the grocery store at about 11 p.m. with her 2-year-old son and had turned on to Park Avenue from 178th Street when a bullet hit her head.

A friend and neighbor who had talked with Millan earlier in the night was outside when he heard the gunshots, he said, and suddenly saw Millan’s son Jamir.

“I see the kid leaning over her, and she’s there on the street,” said the friend, Michael Escobar. “I call him over, I said, ‘What’s the matter with your mother?’”

Escobar called 911. Police and EMS responded, and transported Millan to St. Barnabas Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Millan’s husband, who was the father of the young boy, said Millan was a loving parent.

“All she cared about was her kids,” said Juba Lassiter. “All she cared about was taking care of her kids. Somebody took that from her.”

Family members were watching Millan’s three other children while she went to the store. The oldest child is 11 years old.

Millan’s brother, Antonio Millan, said his two-year-old nephew Jamir may be young but that he knows what he saw.

“He’s smart, and he’s understanding,” Antonio said. “He keeps asking for his mom. He’s pointing at his head. He’s pulling the trigger. He knows his mom is no longer here.”

Family members are perplexed, and said Claudia had no enemies. They said she had dreams of becoming a nurse.

Police have not made any arrests at this time. There are several businesses on Park Avenue that have surveillance cameras installed outside their stores, but police have not said whether they will use them in their investigation.
