Interesting Facts: Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa honored Wanda Sykes with the first Hope of LA award in 2011. She is a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority.

It is hard to believe that funny woman Wanda Sykes worked as anything other than an entertainer. Before comedy, the quick-witted Sykes worked as a procurement officer for the National Security Agency for five years following college. But it was her first stand-up performance at a Washington D.C talent show that set Sykes on the path to stardom.

The Virginia native has opened for a number of big name acts such as Chris Rock. Sykes has since expanded her brand beyond stand-up to include both TV and film. She has written for The Keenan Ivory Wayans Show and made acting appearances on a number of sitcoms like Seinfeld and The New Adventures of Old Christine.

In addition to acting in TV and film, Sykes is an experienced voice artist. She currently has two films—The Muppets and Ice Age: Continental Drift—set to be released in late 2011 and 2012, respectively.
