Marcia Andersen is the first African-American woman in the United States Army promoted to Major General. She was already the highest ranking African-American woman in the army during her previous rank as Brigadier General.

Major General Andersen says that the new ranking “fulfilled my dreams and aspirations of a lot of my family members, my ancestors, and friends and family.” She says that this moment is possible because of those who came before her. Her father wanted to become a pilot, but was unable to do so and became a truck driver. Andersen says, “This is a realization of his dreams that he thought he wanted to do with his life, but was unable to.”

Apparently, Andersen registered for the army by accident: “In the old days, before you registered for classes online, we used to go to a large gym and line up and sign up for classes. On that particular day I needed a science credit…I saw a gentlemen sitting at a table with a big sign in front that said ‘Military Science’… and that’s how it all got started.”
