From NBC Chicago:

There has been speculation as to why 1985 Chicago Bears player Dan Hampton declined his invitation to visit the White House with his former teammates.

His reasons for not going is that the invitation was extended solely to the players and not their family members, he is not a fan of the president and that “it’s been a long time.”

Hampton said, “It just kind of turned me off… that’s something I don’t really even feel like being a part of.”

It has also been speculated that Hampton declined the offer for political reasons, but Hampton replied that he had other things to do and jokingly said, “I had to get ready for the marathon.”

“Other guys didn’t go and nobody said a word,” says Hampton, “We should’ve went twenty-six years ago…I am happy that a lot of them went.”
