Police are hunting for “hair weave” thieves who broke into a southwest Atlanta beauty supply store in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Officers say the burglars used a Dodge Durango to smash through the rear door of the shop and then take off with expensive hair extensions.

The incident happened around 4:30 a.m. at the Beauty and More Beauty Supply store on Martin Luther King Junior Drive.

Police say they found the vehicle, which they say was stolen, outside the store.

TheGrio contacted the store but the manager was reluctant to give a response.

The incident is a latest in a spate of hair extension thefts across Atlanta, with many stores now stepping up security and some even hiring security guards.

This growing trend of hair theft sometimes accompanied by violence is also being reported across the country, in places such as Missouri City, Texas and Dearborn, Michigan.

The most expensive brand, Remy, can cost as much as $200 per package. Packages of hair that may have sold for $80 or $100 retail can be sold for as little as $25 on the black market.
