Williams had not played a tennis match since August when she faced Chanelle Scheepers in the first round of the Brisbane International, but her formidable talent was as obvious as ever as she saw off the South African 6-2, 6-3.
However, the 30 year-old, who intends to scale back her playing schedule still further this year, said afterwards that she remained baffled by how she had become one of the world’s leading sportswomen.
Williams said: “It’s not that I’ve fallen out of love with tennis. I’ve actually never liked sports and I never understood how I became an athlete.
“I don’t like working out, I don’t like anything physical. If it involves sitting down or shopping, I’m excellent at it.”
