After a week of controversial comments on race, the Republican contenders steered away from them in two debates in New Hampshire this weekend.

Former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich had both been criticized this week for statements that many Democrats felt implied that African-Americans were overly reliant on food stamps (Gingrich) and other public assistance programs (Santorum).

Neither repeated those remarks in debates on Saturday and Sunday. Instead, both men
largely piled on former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, who won the Iowa caucus and is a heavy favorite in Tuesday’s New Hampshire primary. Gingrich accused Romney of “pious baloney” when the former governor suggested he had tried to avoid a long career in politics. (Romney’s service would have been longer had he not lost two of the three campaigns he has waged)
