Details concerning the funeral arrangements of Whitney Houston are beginning to emerge. NBC New York reports the funeral will be held in Newark, N.J., the place Houston grew up singing in the local church choir.

Whitney Houston’s funeral will be held in Newark, N.J., later this week, NBC New York has learned.

New Jersey locals remember Whitney Houston as her community mourns

Houston’s body is expected to be flown to New Jersey as early as Monday evening, depending on arrangements in Los Angeles, according to sources working with the family. She was found dead in a hotel room there on Saturday.

Whigham Funeral Home is handling the funeral.

Houston was born in Newark and raised in East Orange. She got her start as a singer in the choir at New Hope Baptist Church in Newark.

Many said she never forgot her Jersey roots.

Her mother, Grammy award-winning gospel singer Cissy Houston, led the musical program at the 112-year-old church. Whitney’s cousin, singer Dionne Warwick, also sang in its choir.
