Jermaine Jones, the 6’8 contestant on American Idol who has been dubbed the “gentle giant” apparently has problems with telling the truth. According to TMZ the idol finalist fabricated a dramatic story to last week to show producers, and to win the hearts and votes of the American people.

American Idol sources told TMZ last week, after appearing on the show, Jermaine came to them and said his dad called him from out of the blue, claiming he abandoned him and his mom 10 years ago, leaving them struggling to make ends meet. Jermaine told producers he was extremely upset that his dad suddenly reappeared in his life now that he was famous and potentially rich. Jermaine said his dad was “a lovely man but a lousy father” and wanted nothing to do with him.

TMZ reached out to Jermaine’s dad, Kevin Jones, who says the sob story is a lie, that he has had an ongoing relationship with Jermaine through the years, and even had dinner with him last week on both Wednesday and Thursday night.

Jermaine’s father also says his son was lying about getting a phone call from him out of the blue; Kevin said he was actually in the audience last week, supporting his child.

Jermaine was eliminated from the competition weeks ago, but impressed the judges with his baritone voice and was brought back as a wild card pick. The R&B crooner made the top 13 cut and is still in the running for the Idol title.

No word yet on whether or not Jermaine will be punished for his lying to the folks over at American Idol, but if he sought to make a name for himself from his sensational sob story, he can pat himself on the back for a job well done.

The “gentle giant” and the other Idol contestants will compete again live tomorrow night at 8/7c on Fox.
