Are we becoming a child-intolerant society?

From Madame Noire: I know I joke at times about preferring pets over children. But the truth is I really do like children. No seriously, I do. Mainly my nephews and nieces, whose company I enjoy immensely. We have lots of fun together riding bikes through the park, going to the movies, museums and out to dinner at kid friendly places. They are truly hilarious little human beings and I really get a kick from listening to their undeveloped brains pontificate about life’s random mysteries such as why are bananas yellow and how do Spaghetti-Os get shaped like letters.

I didn’t even mind sitting in a crowded theater full of other folks’ snotty nosed bundles of joy through Alvin and the Chipmunks the Sequel, and the remastered 3-D version of the Lion King. Or even listening to them sing over and over again the rap from that annoying Jaden Smith/ Justin Bieber song. Yeah, I certainly do adore being around children; I just don’t want to take care of them.

My desire to delay child rearing as long as I physically can is not all about the fear of giving up a certain level of comfort and freedom, including the ability to come as I please and not feeling guilty fixing an improper meal for dinner, although that is a big part of it. But a small part of it involves the anxiety about their safety and if I’m doing the best I could for them. When it comes to parenthood, so many things could go wrong. And despite your best efforts, it really is a toss up as to whether or not they grow up to be doctors or lawyers or sociopathic serial killers – or worse, Republicans. I kid about the Republicans but then I don’t.
