From NBC New York: Police say a man shot his 13-year-old sister while she slept and then turned the gun on his mother at a housing project in Harlem early Tuesday.

The suspect, 28-year-old Steven Murray, was shot by police during a confrontation outside the building. According to a source familiar with the investigation, he first fired on officers, who shot back, firing 84 shots.

The suspect was hit in the legs and torso and was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Police say they responded to the Polo Grounds Houses on Eighth Avenue just before 3:30 a.m. after receiving a call of a female shot. They found the 13-year-old victim, Annie Fryar, face-down in her bed, under the covers, the source told NBC New York.

The girl’s 44-year-old mother, Christine Fryar, was shot in the neck and hand and was taken to Harlem Hospital. She is listed in critical condition.
