Nominations were announced this morning for the 2012 Tony Awards. Black actors and actresses picked up nominations in a variety of categories — many for their work in the revival of The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess, which landed 10 nominations.

A revamped version of the classic musical came back to Broadway’s American Repertory Theater earlier this year amid controversy but critical acclaim. It was nominated Tuesday for best revival of a musical.

Stars Audra McDonald, Norm Lewis, Phillip Boykin, and David Alan Grier all picked up nominations. In addition to the actors, Porgy and Bess also earned nominations for best lighting design of a musical, best costume design of a musical, best sound design of a musical, and best orchestrations. Diane Paulus, the ART’s artistic director, was nominated as best director of a musical.

Other major nominations went to James Earl Jones for best lead actor in a play in Gore Vidal’s The Best Man. Condola Rashad was nominated for featured role in Stick Fly, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph was nominated for her role in Ghost the Musical.
