June is Black Music Month. On June 7, 1979 President Jimmy Carter pronounced June as the month when black music would be remembered. For more than 30 years,Black Music Month has been celebrated by all who appreciate the music of every genre by black artist. President Barack Obama has made a concerted effort during his presidency to announce the nation’s observance each year under the title, African American Music Appreciation Month. To kick off this year’s Black Music Month, theGrio highlights 16 black artists who have earned their place on the list of all-time best-selling albums in the U.S.
