On Chris Matthews’ Hardball Tuesday night, ex-Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele, agreed that the GOP was not doing enough to reach out to minority voters in America. “That’s the one area where I do have a lot of concern,” he said.

Matthews asked Steele whether or not Republicans were going out to middle class black neighborhoods in Germantown, Philadelphia or around the US. Steele could only repeatedly respond “No.”

Steele is aware that the demographic shifts are taking place withing the urban centers and the communities. “For a brief shining moment in 2010 we were developing coalitions but that is not part of the mainstay,” said Steele.

This is not the first time that Steele has criticized his party. In 2010, when he was the RNC chairman, he told a group of 200 students at DePaul University, that African-Americans did not have a reason to vote for Republicans and that this was not new or by accident.

For the last 40-plus years we had a ‘Southern Strategy’ that alienated many minority voters by focusing on the white male vote in the South. Well, guess what happened in 1992, folks, ‘Bubba’ went back home to the Democratic Party and voted for Bill Clinton.
