Irreverent comedian Louis C.K. has cast a black actress to play a mother of white children on his FX sitcom Louie. According to the Huffington Post, Louis C.K said it’s all about the delivery. “If the character works for the show, I don’t care about the racial,” he recently told Jimmy Kimmel.

Louis C.K. has turned so many of the conventions of a television series on their head with his critical darling “Louie” — season premiere this Thursday at 10:30 p.m. ET on FX — why not buck all expectations with the casting as well. On “Jimmy Kimmel Live” (Weeknights, 12 a.m. ET on ABC), he was asked about this in a very pointed way.

Jimmy Kimmel wanted to know why he cast a black woman to play the mother of his children, when the kids have already been seen and “they’re extremely white,” as C.K. put it.

“If the character works for the show, I don’t care about the racial,” the show’s creator, writer, director and star said. Plus, there was another reason he went with a black actress.
