Sparkle, the story of three sisters who form a group (eerily similar to The Supremes) and become famous Motown-like artists, is set to hit theaters August 17th.  The star-packed cast includes Jordan Sparks, Cee-Lo Green, Mike Epps and Whitney Houston in her final acting role.

Sparkle is Houston’s final on-screen performance after her tragic death this past February.

The upcoming musical, inspired theGrio to put together this slideshow of our favorite black musicals from the past.
