The “I Used To Love H.E.R.” rapper also stars as a freed slave, Elam Ferguson on AMC’s Hell On Wheels. On the show, which is now in it’s second season Common’s character comes to terms with the risks and responsiblities of his newly-acquired freedom.

“I really do feel a responsibility playing Elam Ferguson, who is an African American or black man of that time, and is really strong and intelligent and a leader,” Common told theGrio’s entertainment editor, Chris Witherspoon. “During the scenes where I get to speak up for Elam and black people I definitely feel like it’s necessary. It’s a statement for a human being to say “hey I wanna stand up for myself and I deserve to be respected the same way you do.”

Common also revealed during his interview that he is single, and described the type of mate he is looking for. “I just like a great woman, like meaning a woman that’s strong in her own way but allows a man to be a man,” Common said.
