Earlier today, legendary comedian Joan Rivers took to her Twitter account to make a domestic violence joke about singers Rihanna and Chris Brown.

Rivers called Rihanna an “idiot” for telling Oprah during a sit down interview on Oprah’s Next Chapter that she still loves her ex-boyfriend Chris Brown.

The comedian tweeted, “Rihanna confessed to Oprah Winfrey that she still loves Chris Brown. Idiot! Now it’s MY turn to slap her.”

Rivers’ joke was in reference to Brown’s infamous 2009 physical assault on Rihanna.  Her comment is being viewed as tasteless by many Rihanna fans. The remark drew thousands of responses via Twitter, and Rivers is currently a trending topic.

Rihanna allegedly responded with a couple tweets, but never directly mentions Rivers.

The R&B singer tweeted an Instagram photo of Proverbs 15:4 entitled “Control Your Speech,” which could be seen as a dig at Rivers.

And Rihanna’s followup tweet to “Control Your Speech” read the more pointed “Slap on some diapers.”

Fans of both celebrities took to Twitter, and support for both sides has ensued.  Although candid and sometimes over-the-top, Rivers’ domestic violence joke went too over-the-top for some.  Some fans responded calling the joke “insensitive,” with others noting that it was “in bad taste.”

Rivers ultimately responded to all the comments by inviting Rihanna onto her show Fashion Police.
