NBC CHICAGO – Michael Jordan returns to the Chicago area for this year’s Ryder Cup at Medina Country Club, but this time he’ll be more than a spectator.

The former Bulls great will serve as an “official advisor and motivator” of the U.S. team, according to the Los Angeles Times. Davis Love III, captain of the U.S. team, said he personally selected Jordan for this position after spending time with him.

Love told Ryder Cup officials he’s looking forward to Jordan, who’s no stranger to golf, playing a more interactive role at this year’s competition.

“That’s how big the Ryder Cup is,” Love said at a Ryder Cup news conference, “that one of the most recognized people in the world and the most recognized athletes in the world makes sure he’s at every Ryder Cup.”
