President Barack Obama’s campaign has put out a new ad reminding voters of the controversial 2000 Florida voting recount which eventually led to former President George W. Bush winning the White House.

A voiceover, which narrates over images of people inspecting voters’ ballots in the 2000 presidential race between Bush and former Vice President Al Gore, says, “537 – the number of votes that changed the course of American history.”

“The difference between what was and what could have been,” the narrator continues as images of Bush, foreclosure signs and U.S. troops at war appear on screen.

The ad is meant to encourage people who may otherwise have decided to stay home on election day, to show up at the polls in order to avoid a tight race.

The Huffington Post reported the ad began airing today and will be shown in battleground states Ohio, Colorado, Nevada, Iowa, New Hampshire, Virginia, Wisconsin and Florida.
