Kerry Washington recently appeared on The Today Show to talk about her role in the upcoming film Django Unchained, and said that “had to learn German” for the film.
Washington plays the role of a slave who was separated and sold to a different plantation than her husband Django, a role played by Oscar winner Jamie Foxx.
She explained that her character spoke German because that was the language of the first family she was sold to.
Throughout the Quentin Tarantino film, Foxx’s character is on a mission to free his wife. She also commented that while many Tarantino films have been violent, “in this film it really lends itself to what slavery was like in the pre-Civil War South.”
Adding that she feels that in the highly praised film “violence is necessitated to tell the story.”
