According to early box office estimates, Quentin Tarantino’s controversial but critically acclaimed slavery-themed western Django Unchained is shaping up to be a hit.

The Golden Globe nominated action film took in $15 million on its opening day, placing it fifth all time on the list of Christmas Day releases.

Still, its opening came in just behind the highly anticipated musical Les Miserables, starring Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway and Russell Crowe. That film made $18 million on Christmas, making it the fourth best opening on that day.

The top three Christmas Day debuts belong to Sherlock Holmes, Avatar and Meet the Fockers respectively. All of those film went on to gross over $200 million domestically, which bodes well for the future of Django.
