Recording executive Tommy Mottola, the ex-husband of Mariah Carey, is now speaking out about his relationship with the singer, according to the New York Post.

Carey once referred to Mottola as a “controlling” person as well as “mentally and emotionally” abusive during their marriage, which lasted four years.

In his new memoir Hitmaker, Mottola admits that he is demanding, but also says he is the reason for much of Carey’s success.

“If it seemed like I was controlling, I apologize,” he writes in his book. “Was I obsessive? Yes. But that was also part of the reason for her success.”

Mattola, who is 20 years older than Carey, married the pop star when she was only 23.

“An unbelievable energy was running though me, screaming, ‘Turn the car around! That may be the best voice you’ve ever heard in your life,'” Mottola reportedly writes of when he first listened to Carey’s demo.

Mottola’s book will be available in stores on January 15th.
