Chicago State University student Dennis Johnson joined the panel on MSNBC’s “Melissa Harris Perry” show to talk about the Black Youth Project, and his own experiences with gun violence. Johnson, a member of the Black Youth Project, says guns are readily available in Chicago, particularly in low income communities like those on the city’s South Side.

Johnson made a video in which he discussed the shooting of his oldest brother, which he said “woke me up as if somebody had threw water on my face.” And he talked about the first lady’s remarks in Chicago in which she spoke personally about the death of Hadiya Pendleton, and what he thinks it will take to end gun violence, in Chicago and nationwide.

When asked what a different future looks like to him, Johnson said “the North Side of Chicago.”
