Miami Dolphins wide receiver Mike Wallace has received some backlash after tweeting insensitive remarks following Jason Collins’ decision to come out as the first gay athlete playing a major American team sport.

The current NBA star has received a widespread support from his fellow athletes and celebrities.

Still, about an hour after the Sports Illustrated essay by Collins was released, The Miami Herald reports Wallace tweeted:

“All these beautiful women in the world and guys wanna mess with other guys SMH…”  Followed by:  “I’m not bashing anybody don’t have anything against anyone I just don’t understand it”

Shortly after tweeting Mike Wallace deleted the two tweets, and offered an apology:

The National Football League responded to Wallace’s tweet by saying, “we are going to review the comment.  This underscores the importance of education and awareness.”

The Miami Dolphins organization also responded, releasing this statement:

Mike Wallace has apologized for his comments, and we have addressed the matter with him. Mike’s comments do not reflect the views of the Miami Dolphins. We believe in a culture of inclusiveness and respect, and any statements to the contrary are in no way acceptable to our organization. We will address the entire team about our policy of inclusion and make sure they all understand the importance of respecting individual choices.
