Twentieth Century Fox announced Thursday that Independence Day 2 will hit theaters on July 3, 2015.

Will Smith, star of the 1996 blockbuster hit Independence Day, has not been confirmed as a member of the cast, but according to an interview with Bill Pullman, the actor who co-starred in the original as President Thomas J. Whitmore, the sequel will be filmed with or without Smith’s return.

“The Will Smith part of it may be ongoing but I think there’s strategies for both,” Pullman said during an interview with Crave Online earlier this year.

“I like what I have to do in both of them. I’m not in an old age home in a wheelchair being wheeled out for one more moment. It’s a very interesting conception of what happens to [my character] between then and when it picks back up.”

Director Roland Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin will return for the sci-fi summer blockbuster, scheduled to be released 19 years after the original.

Independence Day remains Will Smith’s most successful film financially by a substantial margin. It remains his highest grossing film domestically (with $306 million) and its worldwide total reached $817.4 million.
