TODAY – There are just two days left in the “Cosby Sweater Tournament,” the online showdown that allows fans to vote for their favorite piece of outlandish knitwear from “The Cosby Show,” and the competition’s getting serious.

It’s getting so serious that the man behind the so-called “ugly sweaters,” Bill Cosby, stopped by TODAY Wednesday to explain the finer points of his classic ’80s look.

“Now, the ones with the geometric (patterns), I felt … that they were pieces of art,” the TV legend explained when asked if he thought the sweaters were unfairly maligned. “(I thought,) since I’m on TV, it’s a show, the people are characters, it would be interesting. Some people would say, ‘That’s interesting,’ or some people would say, ‘I like that.’ But you would have moving art.”

But he admitted that not every pullover was really art.

“The sweaters with the straight line across and things like that, um … it’s a sweater,” he deadpanned.

In honor of the sweater-off, TODAY’s Matt Lauer, Savannah Guthrie, Natalie Morales and former host Meredith Vieira decked themselves out in some of the contenders. Guthrie joked that the puffy, blue, zigzag style that she chose worked for her.

“I’ve never felt sexier!” she said with a smile.

Lauer, on the other hand, didn’t share the sentiment.
