NBC Philadelphia – Residents of a suburban Philadelphia town are lashing out after they say a pool party supposedly hosted by an NBA player got out of control.
During a Perkasie, Pa. borough meeting on Monday, the residents blasted their town officials for renting out the Menlo Aquatics Center for a party with an open bar back on August 11, despite the fact that drinking isn’t allowed at the pool.
“You broke your own rule for money,” said Perkasie resident Rebecca Milletic during the meeting on Monday. “And you put people’s lives in danger.”
Borough officials insisted the promoter told them only 100 people would be coming to the pool for a small birthday party. Instead, police say, about 800 people showed up, some using drugs and alcohol, for a party supposedly hosted by Dion Waiters of the Cleveland Cavaliers.
An invitation for the $40 dollar a ticket splash party was posted on Twitter. That invite features a photo of Waiters, a Philadelphia native, and lists him as the host. Borough officials claim they never saw the invite, however.
They also say they didn’t realize another township in South Jersey canceled the event when they found out there would be a bar. Perkasie Borough ultimately booked the party only a few days before it took place.
Police say the party attendees climbed on police cars and pushed lifeguards into the pool. Two dozen officers from neighboring towns were called in to help. Ultimately, officials say, the party goers left litter on the pool property as well as a few broken chairs and a damaged table.
“Whoever was there should not have been urinating on all the property around there and shouldn’t have been drinking on borough property,” said Andrew Rumbold, another Perkasie resident.
