NBC Dallas-Fort Worth – A fight escalated into a series of stabbings at a a Houston-area high school that killed a student and wounded three others, sheriff’s officials said.

Luis Alonzo Alfaro, 17, admitted to the stabbing at Spring High School and has been charged with murder, the Harris County Sheriff’s office said in a statement Wednesday night.

Investigators said the stabbings happened during a fight between several students in a school corridor at about 7:10 a.m. A 17-year-old student was killed and three other students were injured, including one who was airlifted in critical condition and two who suffered minor injuries.

Authorities provided few details on what may have led to the fight, and no other information was available on the teenager who was killed.

“We believe a confrontation of some sort occurred … that ultimately led into a physical confrontation that produced weapons,” Sheriff Adrian Garcia said. “There has been some information that this may have been gang related.”

Some parents said the fight was the continuation of a disturbance that broke out Tuesday. Officials at the school, which has about 3,500 students, would not confirm their comments.

KPRC-TV in Houston reported the school nurse contacted emergency crews and reported five stabbing victims and that the stabbing may have taken place inside the cafeteria.

Authorities said all of the victims in the stabbing were students in the Spring Independent School District. Spring High School is located about 20 miles north of Houston.

Spring school district officials have canceled classes at the high school for the rest of the week. District officials have said that grief counselors will be made available to students and faculty.
