President Obama named two new leaders to head the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities on Thursday.
Dr. George Cooper was appointed as Executive Director of the Initiative, and Dr. Ivory Toldson as Deputy Director.
In a statement on the White House blog, Senior Advisor to the President Valerie Jarrett wrote that “the impact of [HBCUs], and their graduates, on our country has been phenomenal.”
Historic African-American icons, such as Booker T. Washington, W.E.B. Dubois and Martin Luther King Jr., all attended HBCUs.
“The President has called on Dr. Cooper and Dr. Toldson to fortify his Administration’s commitment to HBCUs, and to lead our national effort to champion both the rich traditions of these esteemed institutions, and their promise for the future,” Jarrett wrote.
